2. De'Longhi Stilosa
The De'Longhi Stilosa is a well-rounded, budget-friendly manual espresso machine that's ideal for beginners and coffee aficionados alike. It's user-friendly and looks great on the counter and produces excellent espresso, cappuccinos, and lattes. There are some disadvantages that should be considered.
The Stilosa scored below average for its brew control and quality in our metrics for brewing. This was due to the small filter baskets, and the lack of temperature control. Both of these factors restrict your ability to adjust the extraction. We did however like the fact that it doesn't take long for this machine to preheat and it has a nice amount of adjustability on the spout height.
It also comes with a water tank that holds up to 34 ounces and comes with a built-in indicator for the level to let you know when it's time to refill. It's also movable, which is helpful when you need to clean the tank, or when you don't have a sink in the vicinity. This model also has an adjustable drip pan that allows you to use taller cups under the spout.
Stilosa was also a disappointment on our steaming measurements. This was due to its insufficient control of the temperature of steam and the absence of pre-infusion options. Both of these are standard features in machines that cost more. Despite these issues, we did appreciate the fact that it doesn't need regular maintenance and is backed by a one-year warranty. The De'Longhi Stilosa is a great option for a home coffee bar. It's more user-friendly than other models we've seen and can save money on cafe drinks.
3. Breville Barista Express Impress
The Breville Express Impress Barista (that's quite a mouthful, don't you agree?) is a machine specifically designed for those who are interested in learning about espresso. This single boiler, pumps-driven machine is designed to make it simple for anyone to pull an espresso shot without sacrificing flavor or brewing consistency.
First of all it takes the guesswork out of adjusting the grinder, tamper, and brew group settings with its easy-to-use controls. You can choose between single and double shots, and your preferred temperature. The thermocoil heater built-in ensures that your espresso is ready to go within 30 seconds. This is much faster than the 30 minutes that most single boiler machines need to be at temperature.
Another important feature is the "impressive" dosing and tamping system that works with the tamper to automatically adjust the correct amount of ground coffee per shot. This system uses sensors to measure the depth of the basket and adjusts the amount of ground coffee that is dispensed. If you're less certain about your ability to control manually the size of the grind, the water temperature, and dosing, the machine has various presets to help.
The Barista Express Impress also comes with the infamous single hole steam wand, which can create stunning latte art. It's the same wand you will find in Breville's more sophisticated, premium Barista Express models, and it's a great tool.
I'm not one to advocate for coffee shortcuts, fully automatic machines or even pods, but the Impress does exactly what it's supposed to do without becoming difficult or removing the enjoyment of making a good shot of espresso. I'm pleased to give it a thumbs up for that!
